What happens when you’re trying to create life while someone you love is slowly dying? In his newest solo storytelling show, CareGiver, Jeff Simmermon takes us on a wild, heartfelt, and hilarious ride through one of the most chaotic years of his life.

Jeff is a testicular cancer survivor who needed a lot of medical help to become a dad. Just as he and his wife began IVF treatments, the world shut down for COVID—and if that wasn’t enough, his own father was diagnosed with ALS. What followed was a year of long road trips between New York City and Virginia, caring for his dying father while navigating the emotional minefield of sperm banks, needles, and parenting prep.

It’s a story about family, masculinity, grief, and hope—but it’s also full of absurdity, rage-laughs, and the kind of vulnerable honesty that turns shared pain into collective relief.

Jeff Simmermon is a veteran storyteller whose work has been featured on This American Life, The Moth, and RISK!. He’s released two acclaimed albums of standup and storytelling, and brings the same sharp wit, emotional depth, and comic timing to this deeply personal, strangely uplifting show.

Catch CareGiver at SoHo Playhouse (15 Vandam St., NYC) from May 7–18. This is the kind of show that will hit you in the heart, shake your soul a little, and make you laugh at all the places you weren’t sure you were allowed to.
