Many first-time visitors to New York City are surprised by the popularity of handball here. When strolling around the streets of New York, hardly a day goes by when you don't see a bunch of people slapping a ball up against an upright wall somewhere. Initially introduced by Irish immigrants at the end of the 19th century, New Yorkers have taken handball and made it a sport all their own. In Manhattan alone there are nearly a hundred outdoor handball locations where you can play handball, with several hundred more located in the other four boroughs. All you need to do is bring a ball to a nearby court and you're free to smack it up against a wall for as long as you'd like—free of charge.
