Serpent's Path
Following the murder of his eight-year-old daughter, Albert Bacheret is consumed by grief and a relentless desire for revenge. Convinced that her death is connected to a secretive criminal organization known as the Circle, he joins forces with Sayoko Mijima, an enigmatic Japanese psychiatrist living in France. Calm, methodical, and seemingly untouched by the violence surrounding them, Sayoko helps Albert abduct and interrogate men they believe can lead them to those responsible. As the pair descend further into a shadowy world of exploitation, corruption, and buried guilt, the boundaries between justice and vengeance begin to disappear. Albert believes he is closing in on the truth, but the path laid out before him may be controlled by forces he does not understand. Gradually, his partnership with Sayoko becomes as unsettling and mysterious as the organization they are pursuing.Reimagining his own 1998 cult thriller in contemporary France, director Kiyoshi Kurosawa constructs a haunting, darkly comic study of obsession and moral uncertainty. With precision, Kurosawa turns familiar genre conventions into an atmosphere of gathering existential dread. Led by Damien Bonnard and Ko Shibasaki, Serpent's Path transforms a revenge narrative into a chilling maze of manipulation, shifting identities, and unanswered questions, in which certainty proves elusive, and every step toward justice carries the characters deeper into darkness.
